‘George Hirst’s Benefit’. Yorkshire v Lancashire, Headingley, Leeds 1904. A large and original mono photograph of the Yorkshire and the Lancashire teams prior to Hirst’s Benefit Match on 1st, 2nd and 3rd August 1904. The players and umpires standing and seated in rows, wearing cricket attire and a varied assortment of blazers, caps and boaters. From left to right, standing are John Moss (umpire), Slack (reserve), Willis Cuttell, Ernest Smith, Wilfred Rhodes, Albert Hornby, David Hunter, Alexander Kermode, Reggie Spooner, William Findley, Henry Wilkinson and Walter Wright (umpire), players seated are David Denton, Frank Stanley Jackson, John Tyldesley, Leslie Poidevin, Archie MacLaren, George Hirst, Lord Martin Hawke, Walter Brearley and John Tunnicliffe, sitting on the ground Lees Whitehead (reserve), Hubert Myers and James Hallows. Interestingly, a number of other figures ‘lurking’ in the background have been scratched out on the original negative. The photograph by ‘Altior’ Studios, Leeds, measures 14”x6.75”, laid to photographer’s mount with printed title and players’ names to mount above and below the image. Overall 16.25”x10.5”. Very minor surface blemishes to the photograph, otherwise in very good condition. A wonderfully evocative and rare image of the ‘golden age’ of cricket, a very large version of which was sold by Knights in March 2021, hammer price £1500.
August Bank Holiday 1904 was ‘happily favoured with fine weather’ and George Hirst was having his benefit after twelve years of service to the club. A total of 78,681 people came into the ground and receipts of £3,702, 2s & 3d were unprecedented and only exceeded 21 years later when Roy Kilner collected £4,016 19s & 3d. Lancashire Captain, Archie MacLaren unwisely invited Yorkshire to bat first and they batted for seven hours in total despite having to recover from 143 for five. Ernest Smith, missed before he had scored, was bowled by James Hallows for 98. Hirst made 65, John Tunnicliffe 55 and Lord Hawke 54. Hirst removed MacLaren, Reggie Spooner and Johnny Tyldesley in his first three overs and finished with six for 42 as Lancashire were all out for 173 in response to Yorkshire’s 403. So Lancashire had to save the game on the Wednesday which they did as Tyldesley made an undefeated 108. The match was drawn, Lancashire finished on 163-3.Lancashire won the County Championship in the 1904 season, not losing a match. Yorkshire finished in 2nd place having lost only two matches all season. In the 1904 season, George Hirst averaged scored 2,501 first class runs at an average of 54.36 with nine centuries and took 132 wickets at an average of 21.09.
