‘Lillywhite’s Illustrated Hand-Book of Cricket’. Edited by ‘A Cantab [F. W. Lillywhite]’. Ackermann & Co., Strand, London, and W.H. Mason, Repository of Arts, Brighton 1844. Printed by Thomas Harrild (Late B. Clarke), Printer, Silver St., Falcon Sq. Bound in original green tooled cloth with nice bright gilt title to front. Includes single page engravings of Lillywhite, Fuller Pilch, Thomas Box, and James Cobbett, and fold-out engravings of Roger Kynaston, George Leopold Langdon, Charles George Taylor, and Alfred Mynn. Eight engravings in total. Ownership name in ink to title page ‘A. Pickering, Brighton May 10/ [18]45’. A former owner has annotated in pencil to pages and to verso of one engraving hints and tips on wicket-keeping and batting techniques. Padwick 386 records two editions, both of 1844, and three different versions, one with a portrait of Lillywhite only, one with four Player portraits, and another with portraits of four Players and four Gentlemen. This version has all eight portraits. Bookplate of J.W. Goldman to inside front cover. Some foxing to the engravings and some pages, tear to the Pilch engraving. Minor staining to boards, slight breaking to page block, otherwise a nice copy in good condition. Rare.
