A Correct Account of all the Cricket Matches which have been played by the Marylebone Club, and all other Principal Matches, from the year 1786 to 1822 inclusive...’. Henry Bentley. Printed by T. Traveller, 43 Park Street, New Road, London 1823. Bound in green half calf leather and cloth, raised bands, gilt title and decoration to spine, gilt to top page edges, marbled endpapers. Bookplates of J.W. Goldman to inside front cover and E.D.R. Eagar to front endpaper. The Goldman endplate annotated in ink ‘Exchanged by E.D.R. Eagar...’ presumably in Eagar’s own hand. Padwick 1221. Some rubbing to spine and board extremities, foxing to some pages, otherwise a nice original copy in good/ very good condition.
Only Britcher and Epps preceded Bentley in listing important matches. Without these three pioneers, records of many matches would have been lost when the Lord’s pavilion burnt down in 1825. Bentley was intimately concerned with cricket as a player and umpire, and lived close to Lord’s.
