Horse racing. Paul Louis Emile Loiseau-Rousseau, Paris 1861-1927. A fine late 19th century French bronze sculpture of a steeplechase race horse and jockey beautifully captured in full flight while taking a jump over a naturalistically cast hedge on similar base. The bronze, by Paul Louis Emile Loiseau-Rousseau, Paris c.1895, is signed to the base ‘E. Loiseau’. The piece measures 15”x7”x12” and weighs 8.5kg (18.75lbs). Very good condition.
Loiseau-Rousseau was a student of the sculptor Théophile Barrau and at the turn of the century, he exhibited at the Paris salons, where he won a third-class medal in 1892 and a second-class medal three years later in 1895. He was awarded the gold medal at the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris and was accepted as a Knight in the Legion of Honour in 1901. His busts, animal figures and statuettes, often with African themes, were mainly Art Nouveau in style. Some of his works were later produced by Francois Rudier & Arthur Goldscheider, the founders of ‘Editeur d’art’ (art publishing house).
