‘Fog’s Weekly Journal’ 1730. Original early four page tabloid-size newspaper for Saturday 4th July 1730. Printed by J. Wilford near St. Paul’s, London. Page 3 column 1 features a ten line report on a cricket match. ‘On Monday last a great Cricket Match was play’d on Micklam [sic] Downs in Surrey, for 50l. between three men of Sussex and three men of Surrey, esteem’d the best Players in the respective Counties, which was won by the former. There were present his Grace the Duke of Richmond, Lord Baltimore, Sir Conyers D’Arcy, Brigadier Gore, Mr. Stead &c. On Thursday last was play’d the Cricket Match between the Kentish Men and the Londoners, for 50l. and won by the former. Slight splitting to fold, otherwise in very good condition.
No record of the match played on Mickleham Downs or who took part can be found. The London v Kent match was played at Grays Inn on 2nd July 1730, again no details can be found.
