Sydney Francis Barnes, Warwickshire, Lancashire, Staffordshire, England & Wales 1894-1930. A typewritten letter from the Manager of the Portland Arms Hotel, St John’s Wood to Barnes dated 12th May 1955. The manager writes ‘Dear Mr Barnes, Thank you for your letter. We shall be pleased to reserve a room for you, but I think there is a mistake in the dates you ask for. The Lords Test takes place on the 23rd to 28th and you mention June 7th and 8th. I would be glad if you would kindly let me know which of these dates we are to reserve, Yours Faithfully Robert Gibbons, Manager’. Barnes has replied below in his distinctive copperplate handwriting ‘Sorry to have made such a silly mistake it should of course be Thursday 23 June 1955 and Friday 24 June 1955. Signed ‘S.F. Barnes’. Some wear and creasing to the letter, a small tear near Barnes’s typewritten address, the letter is laid down to its top edge to a card otherwise in good condition
