Herbert Sutcliffe. Yorkshire & England 1919-1945. Interesting single page typed letter from Sutcliffe to ‘Messrs’ Rowan & Co.’ in Glasgow. Written on Sutcliffe’s ‘Sports Agent’ business letterhead, Sutcliffe is confirming terms for ‘permission to assist you... £20 and all expenses’. He continues, ‘I informed Myers Hall [cricket bat maker] that you would place a further order if they agreed to let me off... I would suggest a far larger order of the XXX bats in full size and short handle. I feel sure you will require no less than 6 doz.’ Very nicely signed in ink, ‘Herbert Sutcliffe’. Minor wear to page edges, otherwise in good condition.
‘Messrs. Rowan’ relates to the independently owned outfitters operating in Glasgow from 1846 to 1974, specialising in school, sports and military attire, and who made cricket caps for the Australians on the 1921 tour. Rowan also published the Scottish cricket annual, ‘Rowan’s Cricket Guide’.
