Vyell Edward Walker. Middlesex, 1859-1877. Four page handwritten letter in ink to the Sussex cricketer and author, W.A. Bettesworth, dated ‘26th May [1900]’ with good cricket content. Walker suggests some amendments and corrections to proofs of the book, ‘The Walkers of Southgate’. One amendment refers to ‘Crawley [which] is wrong as printed & should be “Mr. C.D. Crawley [who] was the brother of Mr. G.B. Crawley the hero of the historical match against the Town in which he scored over a hundred, a performance which was also accomplished in 1884 by Mr. G.B. Crawley’s son, Mr. H.E. Crawley”’. He also states ‘I have marked a few other minor errors- for John Lillywhite it was old “Lilly”-W’. Very nicely signed ‘V. Edward Walker’. Very good condition.
Edward Walker was one of seven brothers, the ‘Walkers of Southgate’, who played for Middlesex. He captained Middlesex from 1864 to 1872. In 1859, Walker, playing for an All-England XI v Surrey at The Oval, scored 108 in the second innings, in a season when only two other first class centuries were scored. Walker was President of M.C.C. 1891/1892, and of Middlesex County Cricket Club from 1899 until his death in 1906. Bettesworth’s book ‘The Walkers of Southgate - a Famous Brotherhood of Cricketers’ was published in 1900.
