Oxford University 1887. Original sepia photograph of the Oxford University team, seated and standing in rows wearing cricket attire. Photograph laid down to official photographers mount with players’ names handwritten in pencil to lower border. Players include Brain (Captain), Nepean, Buckland, H. Philipson, Forster, K.J. Key, Gresson, Ricketts, Rashleigh etc. Odd nicks and wear to mount otherwise in good condition. Overall 14”x12”. Excellent image. Sold with a ‘Land and Water’ Supplement photograph 1889 of the Eton team, players include H.W. Studd, H.R. Bromley-Davenport, M.G. Tollemache etc, some wear and soiling to edges otherwise in good condition
This was the Oxford team who played Surrey at the Oval, 27th-29th June 1887. The University beat Surrey by 82 runs. All but one of the team went onto play County cricket, Philipson going onto play for England
