Test and County cricketers c.1880s-1890s. Five excellent early original sepia photographs of individual players of the period. Three are by E. Hawkins & Co., Brighton, C.L. Townsend (Gloucestershire & England 1893-1922) in bowling pose, L.C.H. Palairet (Oxford University, Somerset & England 1890-1909), and S.M.J. Woods (Cambridge University, Somerset, England & Australia 1886-1910), both in batting pose. Other images, assumed also to be by Hawkins, are studio images of E.M. Grace (Gloucestershire & England 1862-1896) three quarter length, and Bob Thoms, umpire who stood in the first two Test matches played in England 1880 and 1882, depicted head and shoulders wearing formal attire in cameo. Each photograph measures approx. 4”x 5.5”, laid to crudely trimmed photographer’s mount. It appears that all the images were originally mounted together as a group prior to being broken up. Adhesive marks and damage to mounts, presumably having had an earlier window mount removed. The photographs in very good condition.
