Percy Chapman and Hubert ‘Nummy’ Deane. M.C.C. tour to South Africa 1930/31. Large original sepia photograph taken at the drawn second Test played at Newlands, Cape Town, 1st- 5th January 1931 of Percy Chapman and ‘Nummy’ Deane, respective captains of M.C.C. and South Africa, standing full length in the sunlight at the back of the pavilion in cricket attire, Chapman wearing a blazer, spectators milling in the background. Handwritten annotations in pencil to verso, possibly in Allom’s hand. The photograph measures 13”x11.5” in an original mount with hand printed title ‘Chapman & Deane’ to lower border, overall 17.75”x16.25”. Photographer unknown. Originally from the collection of Maurice Allom (Cambridge University, Surrey & England 1926-1938) who was a member of the M.C.C. touring party. Light soiling and wear to the mount, otherwise an excellent image in good/ very good condition.
Allom played in only one match in the five match Test series, which South Africa won 1-0 with four matches drawn.
