Hedley Verity. Yorkshire & England 1930-1939. A collection of scrapbooks containing newspaper reports and cuttings covering the playing career of Verity, the compiler unknown. The eight large scrapbooks cover the years 1930, 1931, 1932/33, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1935/36 and 1936. The 1930 begins with the retirement of Wilfred Rhodes and the rise of Verity as his successor, the 1931 scrapbook begins with Verity taking 10-36 v Warwickshire, his 10-10 v Nottinghamshire and progresses through his playing career and death, including the Bodyline and Indian tours, 15 wickets in a day v Australia 1934, and then runs onto cover his son Douglas’s marriage in 1963, the 1932 scrapbook has the original typewritten letter from William Findlay, Secretary of M.C.C. writing to the Secretary of Yorkshire C.C.C. John Nash requesting permission from the Yorkshire Committee to ‘allow Verity to join the M.C.C. team which will visit Australia, New Zealand and other countries in 1932-33’. The team will sail on September 17th next by the Orient Line S.S. Orontes’.... the letter signed by Findlay and dated 15th August 1932. The letter laid down to inside front board of the scrapbook, the scrapbook itself covers the tour to India in 1933/34, there is also what appears to be a manuscript press article in the book entitled ‘Hedley Verity. England Yorkshire Cricketers. Seasons 1930-33’. Writer unknown. The 1933 scrapbook which is shorter covers Verity rise and him becoming a better batsman, the latter parts of the Bodyline tour etc, the 1934 scrapbook covers Yorkshire cricket’s success with Verity and Verity’s record match v Australia at Lord’s, the 1935 scrapbook covers Yorkshire county cricket and winning the County Championship again, Verity taking his 1,000 wicket in six seasons, Tests against South Africa, the 1935/36 scrapbook covers Verity and Yorkshire, the M.C.C. tour to Australia 1935/36 etc and the 1936 scrapbook covers Yorkshire’s tour to the West Indies, Verity scoring a century against Jamaica, Verity 6-26 v Kent, 9-12 v Kent, 7-74 v Warwickshire, Scarborough Festival etc. Plus a further scrapbook with some cricket and Yorkshire interest. Includes an original photograph of Edward ‘Teddy’ Bartrum, Yorkshire cricketer and Ruby player (faults), an excellent photograph of ‘Harry Hayley’s (Yorkshire 1884-1898) Yorkshire County Athletic Warehouse’ Hayley’s shop front established in 1882 and official Scarborough scorecards for matches v South Africa 1935 and Australians 1938, all laid down to pages. Some cuttings and reports loose otherwise in good condition. Sold with two signed letters of provenance to this effect from G. Douglas Verity, son of Hedley, to the vendor and dated September 2003
