Hedley Verity. Yorkshire & England 1930-1939. M.C.C. tour of Australia ‘Bodyline’ 1932/33. A selection of over seventy small candid mono photographs from the tour possibly taken by Verity himself or an other player, with what appears to be annotation in Verity’s or players hand in black ink. There are also pencil notes to some photographs by his daughter Grace. The photographs include three scenes of play at Sydney either in the first Test or Final Test as they played two matches at that venue. Annotation includes ‘Sydney C. Ground, from players room’, one is certainly the final Test, annotation reads ‘Finish of fight for the Ashes. Paynter has just made winning hit’, also one from the 2nd Test at Melbourne 2nd Test, Record crowd of 69,000’’, two from the 3rd Test at Adelaide ‘’Leg theory at Adelaide, 3rd Test’, five images from the 4th Test at Brisbane, ‘Verity bowling to Darling 4th Test’, Jardine leading [out] team’ and ‘Match v Perth & Combined XI. Verity blowing during 7-37 performance’. Other Australian photographs include eight photographs of the players onboard ship the Orontes, group images on beaches, Sydney harbour bridge, visit to a Maori village, scenery, travel, individual images of Sutcliffe, Leyland, Bowes and Langridge full length in bathing wear on the beach, etc. There are also photographs from the New Zealand leg of the tour including play at Launceston etc. Various sizes, the smallest 3.25”x2.5” and the largest 5.25”3.50”. Odd faults, the photographs typical of the 1930’s, some fading, generally good condition. Sold with a copy of a signed letter of provenance to this effect from G. Douglas Verity, son of Hedley, to the vendor and dated September 2003
