Wilfred Rhodes. Yorkshire & England 1898-1930. ‘Death of Hedley Verity, Yorkshire & England in Italy, 31st July 1943’. Handwritten letter of condolence from Rhodes to Mr and Mrs Verity on ‘24 March Grove Road, Huddersfield’ headed paper by Rhodes on the 2nd September 1943. ‘Just a line to say how very sorry both my wife and I were to hear the sad news about Hedley. It is a cruel blow to us but what it means to you one cannot imagine. Please accept our deepest sympathy in your irreparable loss. I know you were proud of him. He was worth it and that makes it all the harder to bear. He has given you a good deal of pleasure and no doubt you would be looking forward to his return to give you more. May god give you health and strength to bear your great trial’. Signed ‘Yours very sincerely Wilfred Rhodes’. Horizontal fold otherwise in very good condition. A poignant letter. From the archive of Alan Hill, Hedley Verity’s biographer
