William ‘Bill’ Voce. Nottinghamshire & England 1927-1952. One page handwritten letter on lined paper from Voce to Alan Hill, Verity’s biographer. Voce is responding to Hill’s request for his thoughts on Verity. Voce’s reply written from his home in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire reads ‘Hedley Verity was in his time the best left hander. He was always a gentlemen, a fine character of a man both on the field and off it. He was very dedicated to the game of cricket, he rather have the ball in his hand than the bat and if he had any failings then I never saw them, a great man’. Signed ‘Yours sincerely. Bill Voce. Alan Hill wrote and published Hedley Verity’s biography ‘Hedley Verity. A Portrait of a Cricketer’ in 1986. He won The Cricket Society/MCC Book of the Year award for this work. He died in 2021 at the age of 92 years
