Ellis Pembroke Robinson. Yorkshire & Somerset 1934-1952. One page handwritten letter/manuscript on lined paper from Robinson to Alan Hill, Verity’s biographer. Robinson is responding to Hill’s request for his thoughts on Verity. Robinson’s reply reads ‘Hedley Verity. The most accurate of all the left hand bowlers. Did not spin the ball very much which enabled him to find the edge of the bat. I still hold the record number of catches in an innings, all at first slip which proves my statement , incidentally they were the first six batsman. A tall man, he made the ball lift more than anyone. A very useful batsman, going in first on many occasions. Got a hundred in Jamaica. A good safe catcher, a cool and calm man, a very great gentleman’. Signed ‘Ellis Robinson’. The letter/manuscript undated. Good condition. From the archive of Alan Hill, Hedley Verity’s biographer
Alan Hill wrote and published Hedley Verity’s biography ‘Hedley Verity. A Portrait of a Cricketer’ in 1986. He won The Cricket Society/MCC Book of the Year award for this work. He died in 2021 at the age of 92 years
