England v Australia, 5th Test, The Oval 1968. Three different original mono press photographs of the closing moments of the deciding 5th Ashes Test at the Oval, all with the England players fielding in close with Derek Underwood bowling. Two depict different views of the dismissal of Graham McKenzie for the eighth wicket, caught by Dave Brown at short leg off the bowling of Underwood. The third shows the iconic moment when Underwood took the wicket of John Inverarity, who had batted throughout the innings having opened and was out LBW playing no shot to Underwood’s famous inswinging ‘arm ball’. This wicket won the Test for England to retain the Ashes. The photograph features all eleven England players appealing, the two batsmen, and the Umpire with arm raised. Unusually, the photograph is signed by thirteen featured participants. England signatures are Underwood, Illingworth, Graveney, Edrich, Dexter, Cowdrey, Knott, Snow, Brown, D’Oliveira and Milburn. Also signed by the Australian batsman, Alan Connolly at the non-striker’s end (signature faded but legible), and the umpire, C.S. Elliott, lacking the signature of Inverarity. Sold with an official scorecard of the match with complete printed scores, signed by Derek Underwood who took 7/50 in the second innings. The scorecard laid to card.
