Roy Kilner. Yorkshire, Europeans & England 1911-1927. Excellent silver plated swing handle cake/fruit basket with pierced basket like decoration and oblong collet foot. The basket with inscription ‘Presented to Private Roy Kilner on the occasion of his marriage 5th November 1914. By a few of his ‘Pals’ at Colsterdale. Leeds Battalion’. 10.5”x8”. No makers marks. Very good condition
With the suspension of the County Championship, Kilner enlisted in the army, joining the Leeds and Bradford ‘Pals’ in the West Yorkshire Regiment. Kilner trained as a mechanic before being stationed at Colsterdale in North Yorkshire as a corporal. While on leave in November 1914, Kilner married Annie Campbelljohn, the daughter of James Campbelljohn, an engineer, at Wombwell Parish Church. Major Booth of Yorkshire C.C.C. served as his best man.Kilner died in 1928 aged only 37 after contracting enteric fever while coaching in India.
