‘Cricket More or Less’. Lord Dartmouth 1926. A book of poetry by Lord Dartmouth (also styled Viscount Lambeth), contained in decorative colour wrappers featuring an illustration of Father Christmas in M.C.C. blazer, Ashes urn under his arm, with a British lion and Australian kangaroo to either side. Titled ‘Christmas 1926’ with four line poem on The Ashes below, annotated in ink ‘From the author’. The contents comprise 55pp of poems covering subjects including cricket, politics, sea shanties etc. Tipped in to red cloth with gilt title to spine. Slipped in is a handwritten poem of six stanzas, assumed to be by Dartmouth, dated 9th December 1882, also a two page typed letter dated 29th December 1930 to ‘My dear Bob’ in which Dartmouth, who is frail, ‘living like a cabbage’ following a stroke, refers to a match in which he played against ‘Liverpool Sefton’, ‘one of the triumphs of my cricketing career’, taking eight wickets. He also refers to his ‘greatest Parliamentary triumph’, enclosing a mono real photograph ‘Christmas’ postcard of himself receiving the ‘Freedom of the Borough of Newcastle[-under-Lyme]’ in 1930.
