Small early original ticket and scorecard for ‘A Grand Cricket Match, at The Christ Church Cricket Ground between Eleven of England and Fifteen of Oxfordshire, played on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday May 23, 24 and 25 1953. Ticket of admission for the three days, half-a-crown.’. Titles and details of the match printed to one side of the ticket/scorecard with red wax seal to lower border and printed to the other side the scorecard of the match with printed titles and players names. This was Fuller Pilch’s England Eleven and many of the leading players of the day played in this match including Pilch, Lockyer, Willsher, Guy, Parr, Caffyn, Sampson, Grundy etc. Oxfordshire won the match by eleven wickets. Oxfordshire made 200 all out in their first innings with Armistead top scoring with 71, Richard Colley 49 not out, Grundy taking seven wickets, in reply the England Eleven scored 72 with Balfour taking three and Cazenove taking six wickets. Following on the England Eleven second innings they were bowled out for 185 with Chatterton making 46no, Grundy 27, Parr 24 and Guy 22, Marsham taking six wickets. Oxfordshire won the match by scoring 61 for three wickets. Handwritten ink scores to the scorecard, which are a little haphazardly recorded. This original ticket and scorecard belonged to Richard Colley and measures 4.5”x3”. Along with the ticket and scorecard is a leather bound edition of ‘Lillywhite’s Cricket Scores and Biographies of Celebrated Cricketers from 1849 to 1854’. Volume IV which also belonged to Colley. He has signed the front end paper and there is some handwritten annotation to the odd page within the book where he features. The book and ticket/scorecard were purchased by the vendor in 1968 and bound in leather since then, with the vendor notes on both items handwritten to a new end paper in the book. The ticket has some age toning and creasing and the book has minor breaking to internal hinges otherwise in good condition throughout. A very rare early ticket and scorecard with good association
