‘Cricket- Gentlemen of Kent v [Gentlemen of] Sussex’ 1861. Small early original scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Higher Common, Tunbridge Wells, 29th & 30th August 1861. Gentlemen of Kent batted first and made a healthy total of 217 with R.J. Streatfeild scoring 62 and J.A. Pepys 53. In reply, Gentlemen of Sussex were skittled out for a paltry 24 including five ducks, with W.S. Norton taking 7/19 for Kent. Following on, Sussex reached a respectable 150 (G.W. King 42), but this was not enough to avoid defeat, Kent winning by an innings and 43 runs. Notable amongst the Kent team were Henry and Edward Bligh, both uncles of future England captain, Ivo Bligh. Originally from the archives of Sussex C.C.C. Printed on the ground by William Brackett of 5 & 6 Upper Parade. 4.5”x3”. The scorecard appears to be laid to tightly trimmed card. Horizontal fold and some age toning, otherwise in good condition.
