‘Cambridge Quidnuncs v. Oxford Harlequins’ 1863. Early original double sided scorecard with incomplete printed and handwritten scores in ink for the match played at Lord’s, 25th & 26th June 1863. The scorecard depicts the Cambridge Quidnuncs complete first innings printed score of 158 with Arthur Daniel top scorer with 74. Oxford Harlequins’ handwritten score shows ‘80 odd with extras’. They went on to reach 251, Francis Inge top scoring with 63, followed by 47 extras! Quidnuncs were then dismissed for 100 in their second innings, with Harlequins knocking off the required eight runs for victory with the loss of just the one wicket. Other players who played first-class county cricket include Russell Walker (Middlesex), Charlton Lane (Surrey), William Traill (Kent), John Walker, Robert Fitzgerald (Middlesex) etc. Printed ‘By Authority of Mr. J.H. Dark’ by F. Lillywhite with announcement of the publication of Fred Lillywhite’s ‘Scores and Biographies from 1746 to 1848’ and fixtures at Lord’s to front, and further fixtures and advertising for Lillywhite’s Guide etc. to verso. 4.5”x6”. Horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
Membership of the Cambridge Quidnuncs and Oxford Harlequins cricket clubs was restricted to players who had been awarded their ‘blue’ at their respective universities or played first-class county cricket.
