‘Grand Cricket Match. 11 of Notts v. 14 Free Foresters’ 1863. Frank Tinley’s Benefit. Early original single sided scorecard for the match played at Trent Bridge Ground, Nottingham, 13th- 15th August 1863. The scorecard with printed scores apparently complete to the end of the second day’s play. The scorecard depicts Free Foresters scoring 114 and 212, Nottinghamshire replying with 115 and standing at 20/0 (Daft 12no, Brampton 8no). Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 211 on the final day and, remarkably, the match ended in a tie. Printed on the ground by George Richards, 39 Greyhound Street [Nottingham]. Notable players include C.F. Daft, C. Brampton, R. Daft, J. Grundy, J. Jackson, R.C. Tinley, M. McIntyre, S. Biddulph, G. Wootton (Nottinghamshire), C.L. and E.K. Hornby (brothers of A.N. ‘Monkey’ Hornby), H.E. Bull, R.A.H. Mitchell, T. Ratliff, F.W. Wright, D. Buchanan (Free Foresters) etc. 4.5”x6”. Horizontal and vertical folds, otherwise in very good condition
The match was notable not only by ending in a tie, but also by the fact that the scores for each innings also almost matched. In addition, Nottinghamshire were 63 runs short of saving the match with just one wicket remaining, Wootton (30no) and Biddulph (33) managing to level the scores before Biddulph was out lbw. Goodrich took thirteen wickets in the match for Free Foresters with his ‘ultra slow’ underarm bowling.

Francis ‘Frank’ Tinley, for whose benefit the match was played, appeared in thirteen first-class matches for Nottinghamshire 1845-1856.
