‘Grand Return Cricket Match. Nottinghamshire v. Surrey’ 1864. Early original single sided scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Trent Bridge, 28th- 30th July 1864. In an exciting and closely fought match Nottinghamshire, without Parr and Shaw, elected to bat first and made 107 with Charles Brampton top scorer with 40 and George Griffth taking 5/46 for Surrey. Surrey, featuring Humphrey, Jupp, Stephenson, Caesar, Lockyer etc. established a small lead reaching 127, Tom Sewell ending 37no. In their second innings Nottinghamshire could only score 81, Griffith taking 6/38 giving him match figures of eleven wickets for 84 runs. Surrey’s James Grundy bowled well, taking 6/20, restricting Surrey’s scoring. At the end of the second day’s play stumps were scheduled to be drawn at 7pm but with Surrey at 63/9, four runs short and with only one wicket remaining, it was agreed to continue playing until Surrey managed to reach their target to win by the slender margin of one wicket. To the verso is correspondence in ink that appears to have been written by a spectator in attendance at the game. Printed on the ground by George Richards, Greyhound Street (Nottingham). 4.5”x6”. Horizontal fold with splitting to fold, and some soiling, otherwise in good condition.
