‘Gentlemen of South v. Players of North’ 1873. Early and rare original double sided scorecard for the match played at the Prince’s Ground, Chelsea on the 5th- 7th June 1873. The scorecard with near complete printed scores. Players of the North elected to bat first and reached 182, Allen Hill top scorer with 40. In reply Gentlemen of the South , featuring the three Grace brothers, E.M., W.G. and G.F., made 237 with W.G. Grace batting through the innings and being the last man out having scored 145. In the second innings, the Players made 228 (Tom Emmett 93), setting the Gentlemen 174 to win, who were skittled out for only 62, Charles Green being the only batsman to reach double figures with 17. James Shaw (6/25) and Martin McIntyre (4/34) bowled unchanged, the Players winning by 111 runs. The scorecard with memoriam style borders. Printer unknown. Printed fixtures at Prince’s Ground to verso. Small pencil annotation. Some age toning and foxing, otherwise in good condition.
Prince’s Cricket Ground in Chelsea, London was a cricket ground, created by the brothers George and James Prince as part of the Prince’s Club, on which 37 first-class matches were played between 1872 and 1878. The ground was built on in 1883. The boundaries of the site are marked by Cadogan Square West, Milner Street, Lennox Gardens Mews, Walton Street and Pont Street. The first match played on the ground was Household Brigade v. Lords and Commons on 3 June 1871.
