‘Grand Cricket Match, All England [London] United Eleven versus Sixteen of Leicestershire’ 1879. Early original single sided scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Grace Road, Leicester, 1st- 3rd September 1879. The sixteen of Leicestershire batted first and reached 89 (George Panter 25), the London United Eleven replying with 65 (William Hearn 29). In the second innings Leicestershire posted 180, Stewart Blucke top scorer with 53. cricketarchive.com lists the London United Eleven being dismissed in their second innings for 67, with William Clarke ‘absent’ and Platts ending 14no, however this scorecard shows that Clarke did bat in the second innings, scoring 4, and Platts going on to make 27no in their total of 84, with Leicestershire winning by 120 runs. Others who played for the London United Eleven in this match include David Eastwood (Yorkshire), Joseph Potter (Kent & Surrey), William Scotton (Nottinghamshire & England, 15 Tests), G.G. Hearne (Kent & England, 1 Test), Fred Wyld (Nottinghamshire), Emmanuel Blamires (Yorkshire & Surrey), James Bray (Kent) etc. Printed on the ground by Batty & Co. of Leicester. 4.75”x7”. Light horizontal fold and creasing to corners, otherwise in good condition.
The London United Eleven played six matches in 1879 including one first-class match against the United North of England Eleven.
