Cambridge University 1880. Two small early original single sided scorecards for matches played at the University Cricket Ground, Fenner’s. One for the pre-season match, ‘First Twelve v. Next Sixteen’, 6th- 8th May 1880, in which the First XII won by 41 runs. The Next XVI batted first and scored 167, the First XII were then bowled out for 86. Following on they reached an impressive 319 (Ivo Bligh 124), before bowling out the Next XVI for 197. The other scorecard is for the match v. Gentlemen of England, 24th- 26th May 1890, a high scoring rain affected game played twelve per side in which the Gentlemen reached 232 in their only innings, Cambridge University then batting through the remaining two days to reach an impressive 593 all out with innings of R.S. Jones (124), H. Whitfield (116) and Ivo Bligh 90. All twelve of The Gentlemen team bowled in the Cambridge innings. Eight players in this match represented England in Test matches, Bligh, A.G. Steel, C.T. Studd, G.B. Studd (Cambridge), and A. Lyttelton, F. Penn, G.F. Vernon, A.J. Webbe (Gentlemen). Both printed by H. Smith, each 3.5”x4.75”. From the collection of F.M. Lucas (Sussex 1880-1887) who played for the ‘Next XVI’. Adhesive marks to verso of both where previously laid down, otherwise in very good condition.
