‘A Grand Match. [Oxford] University v. Gentlemen of England’ 1882. Early original single sided scorecard with incomplete printed and handwritten scores in pencil for the match played at The Parks, Oxford, 29th- 31st May 1882. Oxford University elected to bat first and reached 291 (Charles Leslie 77, Walter Thornton 53, William Hamilton 53, James Walker 50). Gentlemen replied with 358 (Alexander Webbe 108no, George Robinson 6/52). In the second innings Oxford were bowled out for 166 and the Gentlemen chased down the target, ending 166/5 to win by five wickets. Five players who took part in this match represented England in Test matches including, for the Gentlemen, Bunny Lucas (5 Tests), Sandford Schultz (1), George Vernon (1) and Alexander Webbe (1), and for Oxford, Charles Leslie (4).
