‘Surrey v. Sussex’ 1883. Early original double sided scorecard with complete printed and handwritten scores in ink and pencil for the match played at Kennington Oval, 2nd & 3rd July 1883. Having elected to bat first, Sussex, featuring Charles Aubrey Smith, were bowled out for only 80, Edward Barrett taking 8/48 for Surrey. Replying, Surrey then put on 301, John Shuter the top scorer with 108. Sussex were then bowled out in the second innings for 102, Barrett ending with match bowling figures of ten wickets for 97 runs, Surrey winning by an innings and 119 runs in two days. Advertising to verso for John Piggott outfitters, and ‘Cricket. A Weekly Record of the Game’. Printer unknown. 4.5”x6”. Originally from the collection of F.M. Lucas who played for Sussex in this match. Adhesive mark to verso where previously laid down, otherwise in very good condition.
Sir Charles Aubrey Smith (Cambridge University, Sussex & England 1882-1896) captained Sussex 1887-1888 and 1890, and also England in one Test on the 1888/89 tour to South Africa, the only Test match in which he played. When he went to America in the early 1930s he founded and was the first President of the Hollywood Cricket Club.
