‘Sussex v. Cambridge University’ 1890. Early original scorecard with complete printed scores for the remarkable match played at The County Ground, Hove, 19th- 21st June 1890. In a record high scoring match, Cambridge University batted first and reached 179 in their first innings, Robert Douglas the top scorer with 84, Sussex captain Charles Aubrey Smith taking 5/57. Sussex then replied with 270 with contributions from Walter Quaife (58), George Bean (46), Billy Newham (46) and Smith (33), Sammy Woods taking 5/61 for Cambridge. In deficit by 91 runs, Cambridge declared their second innings at an astonishing 703/9, then the record for the highest innings score in a first-class match, with centuries from Francis Ford (191), Gregor MacGregor (131) and Cyril Foley (117). Sussex were then bowled out for 187 (Newham 56), Cambridge winning by an incredible 425 runs. The 1339 runs scored was at the time the highest aggregate in a first-class match. Originally from the collection of Cyril Foley who played for Cambridge in this match. Printed by Crowhurst of Brighton, the card appears to have been laid down to tightly trimmed white card with the initials ‘C.P.F.’ annotated in ink to verso. 5”x7.5”. Some age toning, small loss to lower right corner, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
