Australia tour to England 1890. ‘England v. Australians’ First Test, Lord’s. Early original single sided scorecard with complete printed and handwritten scores in pencil for the first Test, played at Lord’s 21st- 23rd July 1890. Electing to bat first, Australia made a steady start, the first wicket falling at 66, with John Lyons the first to fall for 55. They then lost their last seven wickets for 23 runs and were bowled out for 132. In reply England got off to a bad start with W.G. Grace dismissed first ball, but George Ulyett’s 74 helped them to 173, Lyons taking 5/30 for Australia. In the second innings Australia made 176 (John Barrett 67, Lyons 33), setting England 136 to win which they did with Grace ending 75no to win by seven wickets. Remarkably, neither wicket-keeper, Gregor MacGregor nor Jack Blackham, conceded a bye throughout the match. Pencil annotations to verso. Some soiling, otherwise in good condition.
W.G. Grace never scored a Test century at Lord’s. His 75no in England’s second innings was the nearest he came. England went on to win the second Test, the third was washed out without a ball bowled, England winning the Ashes series 2-0.
