Australia tour to England 1893. ‘England v. Australia’. Second Test, Kennington Oval, 14th- 16th August 1893. Early original double sided scorecard with incomplete printed scores. W.G. Grace, captaining a strong England team, won the toss and batted first. They put on an impressive 483 with contributions from Stanley Jackson (103), A.E. Stoddart (83), Grace (68), Arthur Shrewsbury (66), Albert Ward (55 on his Test debut) and Walter Read (52). George Giffen took 7/128 for Australia. In reply, Australia could reach only 91, (John Lyons 19, Johnny Briggs 5/34). Following on, Australia did well to almost avoid an innings defeat, scoring 349 (Harry Trott 92, Alick Bannerman 55, George Giffen 53) with Briggs taking a further five wickets to return match bowling figures of ten wickets for 147 runs. England won by an innings and 43 runs. Advertising for Duke & Son cricket balls to front and F.H. Ayres sports equipment to verso. Minor foxing and soiling to front, otherwise in good condition.
England’s victory in the second Test was enough to win the series 1-0, with the other two matches drawn, and thereby regain the Ashes.
