John Thomas ‘Jack’ Hearne. Middlesex & England 1888-1923. Two early original scorecards with complete printed scores from 1893 featuring notable performances by Jack Hearne for Middlesex. One is for Nottinghamshire v. Middlesex at Trent Bridge, 17th- 19th August 1893. Middlesex were bowled out for 184 in their first innings, Jack Mee taking 7/51 for Nottinghamshire who then replied with 251 (J.A. Dixon 133) with Hearne taking 7/99. Facing a first innings deficit of 67, Middlesex then posted 319, setting Nottinghamshire 253 to win. Hearne then took a remarkable 8/55 to help dismiss Nottinghamshire for only 92, ending with match bowling figures of 15 wickets for 154 runs. Middlesex won by 160 runs. Printed on the ground by Charles Richards of Nottingham. The other scorecard is for the match v. Kent at Lord’s, 24th- 26th August 1893, which Kent won by twelve runs. Jack Hearne took five wickets in each innings for Middlesex with match figures of ten for 152 including the wickets of his namesakes Alec Hearne (twice for 11 & 6), and Alec’s brother George for 32 in Kent’s second innings. Kent’s Alec Hearne took six wickets in the match. Both scorecards measure 4”x6” and appear to have been laid to tightly trimmed cards with the initials ‘C.P.F’ of Cyril Foley to verso, from whose collections these originate. Foley played for Middlesex in both matches. Slight uneven trimming to both cards, otherwise in very good condition.
There were numerous players by the name of Hearne who played for both Middlesex and Kent in the late 1800s, not all related. Confusingly J.T. Hearne of Middlesex had two brothers, Herbert and Walter, who both played for Kent with the unrelated Hearne brothers, Alec and George.
