Australia tour to England 1896. Record low score. ‘M.C.C. and Ground v. Australians’. Rare early original commemorative silk scorecard for the remarkable match played at Lord’s, 11th & 12th June 1896. M.C.C. batted first and posted 219, A.E. Stoddart top scorer with 54, F.W. Jackson 51, Hugh Trumble taking 6/84 for the Australians. Replying, the Australians were then bowled out for an astonishing total of just 18 in 22 (five ball) overs. The top three batsmen, James Kelly (8), Harry Graham (4) and Harry Trott (6) were the only players to score, the remaining seven batsmen all out for ducks. George Giffen was absent ill. M.C.C.’s Dick Pougher took five wickets in three overs without conceding a run, Jack Hearne taking 4/4 off eleven overs. Only the wicketless Dick Attewell was ‘expensive’, conceding 14 runs off eight overs. Following on, the Australians were bowled out for 183 (Joe Darling 76), Hearne taking all nine of the Australian wickets to fall, ending with match bowling figures of 14 wickets for 77 runs. M.C.C. won by an innings and 18 runs, the match being completed in two days. 5.75”x9”. The silk scorecard laid to tightly trimmed card. Minor foxing, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
The Australian’s score of 18 was their lowest recorded score in England and the lowest against M.C.C. Wisden called it ‘perhaps the most sensational match of the whole tour. The game is already a historical one... By winning in such sensational style the M.C.C. at last took their revenge for the never-to-be-forgotten defeat in 1878.’
