Australia tour to England 1896. Ranjitsinhji’s Test debut. England v. Australia, 2nd Test, Old Trafford. Early original single sided scorecard with complete handwritten scores in ink for the match played 16th- 18th July 1896. In a high scoring match Australia elected to bat first and made 412, Frank Iredale top scorer with 108, George Giffen 80, Harry Trott 53. Tom Richardson took 7/168 for England, and even England’s wicket-keeper, Dick Lilley, was called on to bowl his leg breaks, taking the wicket of Trott to break a dangerous partnership. In reply England reached 231, Lilley scoring 65no, and Ranji 62 in his first Test innings. Required to follow on, Ranji excelled again by recording his first Test century, ending 154no when he ran out of partners, England ending on 305. Set 125 to win, Australia managed to reach their target, losing seven wickets on the way, to win by three wickets. Richardson took a further six wickets to end with bowling figures of thirteen wickets for 244 runs, bowling an astonishing 110 (five ball) overs in the match. The 1896 Ashes Test series was played over three matches, England winning the first, Australia the second, with England prevailing in the third to take the series 2-1 and retain the Ashes.
