M.C.C. and Ground v. Sussex’ 1897. Early original double sided scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Lord’s, 13th- 15th May 1897. Sussex elected to bat and reached 418 thanks almost entirely to an innings of 260 by Ranjitsinhji, with only Billy Murdoch (51) providing any real support. M.C.C. then replied with 266, Malcolm Jardine (father of future England captain, Douglas Jardine) top scorer with 52, Cyril Bland taking 6/105 for Sussex. Following on with a deficit of 152 runs, M.C.C. managed to post 335 in their second innings (William Chatterton 79), setting Sussex 184 to win. However, with the exception of Tim Killick (48), the Sussex batting failed and they were bowled out for 137 handing M.C.C. an unlikely turnaround victory by 46 runs. Bland, playing for Sussex in only his second first-class match, took nine wickets in the match for 218 runs off 83.2 (five ball) overs. Originally from the collection of C.P. Foley who played for M.C.C. in this match. 5”x8.25”. Adhesive marks to verso where previously laid down, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
