Surrey C.C.C. 1897. Three early original double sided scorecards for county matches played by Surrey at Kennington Oval. Most notable is the scorecard with complete printed scores for the match v. Hampshire, 9th- 11th August 1897, in which Surrey batted first and amassed a huge first innings total of 579 including the then highest opening partnership in first-class cricket of 379 between Bill Brockwell (225) and Bobby Abel (173). All eleven of the Hampshire players bowled. Hampshire were then bowled out twice, for 149 and 127, Tom Richardson taking nine wickets, Surrey winning by an innings and 303 runs. The two other scorecards, both with incomplete printed or handwritten scores in ink, are for the matches v. Leicestershire, 3rd- 5th May 1897 (Surrey won by an innings and 285 runs, Abel scoring 144 and Tom Hayward 130 in Surrey’s only innings), and v. Gloucestershire, 31st May- 1st June 1897, which Gloucestershire won by five wickets, Gilbert Jessop taking ten wickets in the match. Printed fixtures at The Oval for season 1897 to verso of all three scorecards. Each 4.5”x6”. Horizontal fold and minor foxing to the Leicestershire and Gloucestershire cards. The Hampshire card in very good condition.
