Australia tour to England 1902. ‘England v. Australia’. Fifth Test. ‘Jessop’s Match’. Early original double sided scorecard with incomplete printed scores for the 5th Test at Kennington Oval, 11th- 13th August 1902. With Australia 2-0 ahead and the series already won, Australia elected to bat first and closed the first day 324 all out, with Hugh Trumble making 64no, Monty Noble 52, Victor Trumper 42 and George Hirst taking 5-77 for England. In reply, England made 183, with Hirst making 43, Johnny Tyldesley 33 and Trumble taking 8/65 for Australia. England then bowled Australia out for 121 in the second innings, Clem Hill top scoring with 34, Bill Lockwood taking 5/45, leaving England requiring 263 to win. Struggling at 48/5, Gilbert Jessop came to the wicket at number seven and made a whirlwind 104, his first Test century, from 76 balls in only 77 minutes. More wickets fell and fifteen runs were still needed when last man, Wilfred Rhodes, joined Hirst at the wicket. The two Yorkshiremen stood firm and, scoring mainly in singles, took England to victory by one wicket, Hirst finishing on 58no. Trumble bowled unchanged from the pavilion end through both innings.
