‘Nottinghamshire v. Gloucestershire’ 1903. Early original silk scorecard to commemorate Arthur Jones’ career best innings of 296 in the match played at Trent Bridge, 23rd- 25th July 1903. Batting first, Nottinghamshire’s openers Arthur Jones (296) and Jimmy Iremonger (44) put on an opening stand of 107 and went on to score 503 (William Gunn 76). Heavy overnight rain made the wicket difficult and Gloucestershire were bowled out for only 88, Tom Wass taking 6/53. Following on, Gloucestershire were bowled out for 159 (Edward Spry 75), Wass taking a further five wickets to give him match figures of eleven for 103. Nottinghamshire won convincingly by an innings and 256 runs. Originally from the collection of Arthur Jones. Printed by Charles H. Richards of Nottingham. Approx. 4.75”x7.25”. The scorecard is partially laid down by the top and bottom edges to black album page. Slight adhesive show-through, stain to centre, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
In his record breaking innings, Jones batted throughout the first day, ending 280no. His 296 was the highest ever by a Nottinghamshire batsman until surpassed by Walter Keeton’s 312no against Middlesex in 1939. Jones captained England in two Test matches on the 1907/08 tour to Australia.
