‘M.C.C. & Ground v. Kent’. 1904. Early original scorecard with complete printed scores for the match played at Lord’s, 16th & 17th May 1904. The M.C.C. team comprised four members of the South African touring party, Frank Mitchell, Louis Tancred, George Shepstone and Barberton Halliwell, and also Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. M.C.C. batted first, scoring 201 (Shepstone 48, Tancred 45, Albert Trott 43), Kent replying with 177 (Cloudesley Marsham 71). In their second innings M.C.C. could reach only 106, setting Kent 131 to win, but with the first five batsmen out without scoring and the score standing at 12/5, they could not recover and were bowled out for 97, Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard taking 6/23, M.C.C. winning by 33 runs. Originally from the collection of Cyril Foley who played for M.C.C. in this match. The card appears to have been laid down to tightly trimmed white card with the initials ‘C.P.F.’ annotated in ink to verso. 5”x8.25”. Very good condition.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes, played in ten first-class matches 1900-1907, all for M.C.C.
