Swimming, early 1900s. Mono real photograph postcard of ‘Prof. J.A. Jarvis, Ex-Amateur Champion Swimmer of the World’ depicted with his vast array of trophies and medals. Signed in ink to verso ‘J. Jarvis. Once a swimmer’. Mono postcard of ‘Professor Harry Harper “The Human Submarine”’, signed by Harper to verso, postmarked 1912. Publishers unknown. Sold with a plain postcard signed by T.W. ‘Bill’ Burgess, the second person to successfully swim the English Channel, and a handwritten note in ink ‘Presented to our esteemed Captain Miss Lily Smith in commemoration of her record swim from Dover to Ramsgate’ dated 28th August 1912. Sold with two official programmes for the ‘Annual Bath Gala’ at Pitfield Street Baths, 22nd September 1927, and Poplar Baths, 4th October 1934, each with unknown signature to front covers. Good condition.
John Arthur Jarvis competed in three Olympic Games winning gold medals in swimming and water polo in 1900.
