‘Stoolball Match (Probably the first for 200 years in London)’. Lord’s 1918. Rare official scorecard for a stoolball match played at Lord’s, 31st August 1917 ‘Under the Patronage of:- H.R.H. Princess Louise (Duchess of Argyll). The Lord Mayor of London. The Lord Lieutenant of the County of Sussex, &c., &c., &c.’. The card lists the teams, ‘(Most of whom have not seen or heard of the Game before this month nor played it till to-day)’, for ‘2nd London General Hospital (Damaged by Wounds)’ and ‘”Ye Anciente Lawyers” (Damaged by Age)’. The Lawyers team features one notable cricketer, C.H.B. Marsham (Oxford University & Kent 1900-1922). Sold with three original sepia real photograph postcards depicting the players on the field and playing the game. Lawyers (77) beat the Hospital (55) by 22 runs. Adhesive marks to verso of all four items, otherwise in good condition.
Stoolball is thought to have originated in Sussex and continues to be played in leagues in Sussex, Kent, Surrey and the Midlands.
