‘Drewry’s Derby Mercury’ 1771. Early original four page broadsheet newspaper for Friday 30th August 1771. Printed and sold by J. Drewry of Derby. The newspaper features two cricket references, one on page 2 column 4, five lines, ‘On Tuesday and Wednesday the 13th and 14th of August, a great Match at Cricket was played between the Gentlemen of Stanstead Abbots and the Gentlemen of Walden, which was won by the latter by 41 Notches’. Also on page 4 column 1, an intriguing eleven line report from Nottingham in which a ‘great Match between the young Gentlemen of that Town and Sheffield was play’d on Monday and Tuesday last, but not determined, on account, it is said, of a Dispute having arisen by one of the Sheffield players being jostled while in... It is said one of the Sheffielders, whose name is Ofgathorpe, by his great Activity, kept in batting for several Hours’. Duty stamp to lower right corner of page one.
