‘The General Advertiser’ 1788. Early original four page broadsheet newspaper for Friday 25th July 1788. Printed by J. Almon of Fleet Street, London. Page 3 column three features an article describing ‘The Match of Cricket- the Hampshire Club against All England, for one thousand guineas each side, began playing yesterday, at Seven Oaks Vine, Kent’. The players of both teams are listed, comprising some notable names, for All England Mr. Louch, Aylward, Ring, Clifford, Bullen, Booker, Brazier, Phenix, Bowra, Boreman, Lumpy [Edward Stevens], or Croat. For Hampshire, Small senior and junior, T. & H. Walker, John and James Wells, Taylor, Beldam, Purchase, Harris and N. Mann. ‘Great expectations are expected on the side of Hampshire, from the abilities of Small sen., T. Walker, John Wells, Baldam[sic] and Purchase’. Duty stamp to lower right corner of page three. Minor wear to fold, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
