‘The Star’ 1793. Early original four page broadsheet newspaper for Saturday 27th July 1793. Printed by J. Mayne, Temple Bar, London. Page 4 column 2 features a five line report and scorecard for the match between Surrey and Hampshire. ‘On Monday last and the two following days, was played a Grand Match of Cricket on Dartford Brimp [Brent], two Select Elevens, between Surry [sic] and Hants, for 1000 guineas. This match was made between Earl Winchelsea and [-] Lee, Esq’. The scorecard shows Surrey (171 & 83) defeating Hampshire (113 & 88) by 53 runs. Opening the batting for Surrey, Billy Beldham carried his bat for 106no in the first innings. Duty stamp to lower right corner of page three. Some wear to fold, otherwise in good/ very good condition.
cricketarchive.com shows the three-day match, played 22nd- 24th July 1793, as being between Surrey and England, not Hampshire.
