Hedley Verity. Yorkshire & England 1930-1939. ‘Ten wickets for 10 runs. Yorkshire v Nottinghamshire, 9th- 12th July 1932’. Original scorecard for the famous match played at Headingley where Hedley Verity took 10-10 runs for Yorkshire in Nottinghamshire’s second innings. The folding scorecard with fully completed printed detail and nicely signed in ink by Verity to the centre of the scorecard. Good/very good condition. A rarely seen scorecard for this record breaking bowling analysis. Sold with two telegrams sent to Verity on the following day to his home in Rawdon, the 13th July, one from Roland Ryder, Secretary of the Warwickshire C.C.C. and the other from ‘Grimshaw’ of St. Annes. Possibly Norman Grimshaw who played second XI cricket for Yorkshire. This was Verity’s scorecard and is sold with a signed letter of provenance to this effect from G. Douglas Verity, son of Hedley, to the vendor and dated July 2001
Verity took ten wickets in an innings for second time in 1932. His final figures were 19.4 overs, 16 maidens, 10 wickets for 10 runs including a hat-trick and these figures of ten wickets for 10 runs still remains the record for a bowling analysis in first class cricket matches. Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 234 in their first innings, Yorkshire replied with 163-9 declared after overnight rain leaving Verity to step on to the stage to perform these incredible bowling figures, Nottinghamshire being bowled out for 67. Verity took ten wickets bowling 52 balls. He took 2-64 in the first innings. Yorkshire won the match by ten wickets.
