‘The Halifax Cricket Tournament: Visit of the American Twelve of Philadelphia, August 1874’. J.B. Lippincott & Co. Philadelphia 1874. Original attractive wrappers, with title on front wrapper within an acanthus leaf cartouche and ‘Presentation Copy’ printed above. This attractively designed pamphlet, ‘published for private circulation only’, reports on a series of matches between America (represented by the visiting Philadephians), Canada and England (represented by 60th Royal Rifles based in Halifax). Ink annotation to p15. Contained in modern cream cloth clamshell case with gilt title to spine. Ownership initials in ink to front wrapper ‘A.A.O.[?]’. Padwick 5740. Minor nicks to and wear to wrapper extremities, chipping to spine, otherwise in very good condition. Sold with a similar booklet related to earlier precursors of the Tournament titled ‘Official Report on the International Cricket Fetes at Philadelphia, in 1868 and 1872 with an Appendix’ and ‘Sequel to the “Official Hand-book”’ printed above, set in matching acanthus leaf cartouche. Also published by J.B. Lippincott, in 1873. 38pp in original wrappers. Contains an article on the 1872 fete by R.A. Fitzgerald and others on ‘Cricket in America’ and ‘Cricket by Moonlight’.
