‘My Cricketing Days’. C.G. Macartney. First edition London 1930. Original green cloth with gilt title to spine. Presentation copy with dedication to front endpaper, ‘To Sir James Barrie [J.M. Barrie], As some slight acknowledgement of the kindly interest which he has taken in my cricket & the friendship with which he has honoured me’. Very nicely signed by Macartney and dated 26th July 1930. Macartney was a member of the Australian touring party to England in 1926 and one photoplate opposite p170 features ‘Sir J.M. Barrie at the Wicket, Stanway House, in 1926’ playing an informal game of cricket with M.A. Noble, A. Mailey, H.L. Collins and Macartney. On pages 193-194 in the text Macartney writes ‘the [Australian] team received an invitation from Sir James Barrie to spend a day with him at Cheltenham... this was my first meeting with the famous author and dramatist... who is a most enthusiastic cricket supporter... and is a good judge of a player... This stay at Stanway House was the beginning of a friendship between Sir James and myself which I consider one of the greatest honours ever paid me’. Slipped in is an original double-sided printed promotional leaflet for the book. Minor wear to head and foot of the spine, slight bumping to corners, some breaking to page block, otherwise in very good condition. An excellent association copy from Barrie’s own collection.
